Cambridge Musical Theatre Dance Classes
Ignite Arts Academy is a leader in Cambridge Musical Theatre classes. As musical theatre dance classes are drama based, they require the dancer to have an understanding of how to create various emotions through their movement, facial expressions, and voice.
Musical theatre dance classes also known as 'theatre or Broadway dance' teach students how to sing whilst dancing – to control the breath and reserve energy, whilst at the same time telling the dramatic story being portrayed through the song.
Cambridge Musical Theatre Class Details
DAYS : Mondays, Term 1, 2024
Juniors (5 - 8 years) 3:30 - 4:15 pm
Our junior class is a great introduction to the fun of musical theatre. Classes are based on group work, working with the ‘Broadway Baby’ level of the Encore Theatre Dance Syllabus, learning 3 or 4 musical theatre dances accompanied by singing for assessment in the latter half of the year. We play a lot of theatre games to build confidence and willingness to work and learn with others.
Intermediates (9 - 12 years) 4:15 - 5:15 pm
The intermediate class is where kids focus more heavily on the fundamentals of musical theatre, with a focus on acting technique, vocal confidence, and coordination. We work with levels 2, 3, and 4 of the Encore Theatre Dance Syllabus, depending on the skills and level of the participants, to build a strong musical theatre song and dance foundation. This is critical for the shift up to the senior class and for the tamariki to build the confidence to audition and participate in local theatre productions around the Waikato. We work more individually on the individuality of the children's voices, including masterclass-style vocal workshops on solo musical theatre pieces that they have the freedom to choose themselves.
Seniors (from 12+ years) 5:15 - 6:15 pm
This class is for our top-performing musical theatre students at Ignite to refine their craft. We focus heavily on the Stanislavsky technique to create ‘real’ acting habits and natural choices as the characters we play. We use levels 4, 5, and 6 of the Encore Theatre Dance Syllabus to build big characters on stage and entertaining performances from the students. We engage in lots of improvisation games to get the actors thinking on their feet and working with other ideas. With a heavy focus on vocal technique, students will explore the different genres of musical theatre and the vocal techniques needed to successfully sing the different styles
