Street dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music, or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles mostly; breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.

Those who are interested in crew work and training will need to audition for spots within the three Academy Crews. Auditions will be held annually. Crews will then be made up of the successful dancers who attended and were selected during that audition process.

Crews will be selected based on the following age groups:
Junior Crew : 8 yrs - 12 yrs
Varsity Crew : 13 yrs - 17 yrs
Adult Crew : 18 yrs and up

Our Ignite Street Dance Crews will be focussing on training in all styles of Street Dance and using their studio rehearsal time to prepare for upcoming competitions. These intense training sessions are aimed at developing the teams/crews to be industry and competition ready. Some competitions we will be preparing for are: Street Dance NZ, Hip Hop Unite, Dance Brandz, Get The Beat, World Supremacy Battlegrounds.

Please be aware that Crew work is a big commitment, members are required for extensive and multiple training times which will vary dependent on competitions, and will increase closer to competition week. Also, please note that there will be additional costs (on top of classes) for competition entry fees, uniforms and some travel may be required. We will be exploring the possibility of fundraising to help with payment for the extra expenses (not including class fees).

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.

Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance. Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to modern dance, ballet, and other classical concert dance styles.
In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to combine the strong but controlled legwork of ballet with modern that stresses on torso. It also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristics of modern dance. Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used, as well.
